ARTHUR ‘Push-and-Run’ ROWE
In the late 1960s Arthur Wait, chairman of fourth-level Palace, invited the truly great Arthur Rowe to assist manager George Smith. Rowe had taken Spurs to their first-ever Premiership-equivalent title. After health issues ended his spell at Spurs Rowe became revitalised at Selhurst Park. Within a year he took over and in just one season Palace reached the Third Division and achieved a club scoring record of 110 goals (including 30 from Palace great Johnny Byrne). Rowe’s attractive ‘push-and-run’ style attracted a fourth-level average home attendance of just under 20,000. When poor health saw him step down in 1963 Rowe contributed to the discovery of the likes of John Jackson, David Payne and Alan Stephenson. Also Rowe had brought George Petchey to the club, the man who later coached Palace to the First Division. Indeed Rowe was the proudest man present when Palace made their 1969 top-level debut against the United of Best and Charlton in 1969. He had pledged in 1960 that Palace would finally reach the top level within 10 years. It was achieved in 9!
This extensively-researched work includes:

- Rowe’s early life
